• During the XIX century, the Irish population suffered the effects of a terrible famine which forced them to leave their own country looking for a better place to live. 

2. What does the narrator mean by saying "it is the tears of the immigrants that made the green fields of the USA"?

• The narrator means that nowadays the American population can enjoy prosperity because immigrants worked hard to reach it long time ago. 

3. How did the protagonist's life get better in the USA? Mention two facts.

• The protagonist gained his American citizenship, became the owner of a small farm and grown a large family. He even took part in politics and several of his children graduated at High School.
