1. Why was child labour common in mines?

• A lot of unskilled workers were needed in mines since there was no automatic machinery for refining processes. On top of that, families were very poor people were very poor, so it was common that children had to find a job.

2. Why was the practice of eating on the roofs disapproved of by the mine owners? 

• Eating on the roofs was disapproved because it damaged the roofs of the houses and put children in danger. That’s why the mine owners not only reproved the children, but also fined them.
